What is Maternal Mental Health?

Maternal Mental Health refers to a woman’s emotional, social, and psychological well-being during pregnancy and the first year after childbirth. This period, often called the perinatal period, can bring a range of intense emotions. While many women experience the “baby blues,” some face more significant challenges like perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs), which can include depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

At Child & Family STEPS, our services are designed to address these challenges, providing mothers with the tools and support they need to navigate this period with confidence and resilience. We offer a holistic approach that considers the unique needs of each mother and her story.

Dr. Holly Paymon
  • Specialized Expertise: Navigating your mental health while also caring for your baby requires specialized support from someone who understands. As a mother myself, I am dedicated to providing expert, compassionate care tailored specifically to mothers. With specialized training and experience in NICU and NICU follow-up care settings, I understand the specific challenges that can arise during the perinatal period, from postpartum depression and anxiety to birth trauma to stressful early experiences.
  • A Focus on You: In a world that instantly prioritizes the baby, our work together is a protected space for you. My focus is on your well-being, helping you process your experiences, rediscover your sense of self, feel confident in your motherhood journey, and build the resilience you need to thrive.
  • A Safe and Nurturing Environment: I provide a warm, confidential, and non-judgmental space where you can share your honest feelings without fear. Here, you can talk about the parts of motherhood that feel hard, messy, or confusing.
  • A Holistic Approach: I recognize that your mental health is connected to your physical health, your relationships, and your environment. We will work together to address all facets of your experience, ensuring you feel supported as a whole person, not just as a mother.

What to Expect in Our Sessions

Our work together is collaborative and is designed to meet you wherever you are on your journey.

1. Making Space for Your Story: Our first sessions will be dedicated to you. You will have the time and space to share your experiences – your pregnancy, your birth story, your postpartum adjustment – in a way that feels safe. We’ll explore how you’re feeling now and what your hopes are for the future.

2. Understanding Your Experience: We will work to make sense of what you are going through, identifying symptoms of postpartum depression or anxiety, understanding the impact of hormonal shifts and sleep deprivation, or processing a difficult birth or hospital experience.

3. Developing Practical Coping Skills: I will teach you evidence-based strategies to manage difficult emotions. This may include techniques to calm anxiety, challenge negative thought patterns, improve communication with your partner, foster a secure attachment with your little one, and find practical solutions for the stressors of motherhood.

4. Strengthening your Support System: We will identify and explore ways to strengthen your network of support, helping you feel more connected.

5. Reconnecting with Yourself: Motherhood can often lead to a shift in identity. We will work on rediscovering your personal strengths, values, and interests, helping you integrate your new role as a mother with your core sense of self.

Who is Maternal Mental Health support for?

Maternal Mental Health services are for any mother or expectant mother who is struggling with the emotional challenges of pregnancy and parenthood. This includes:

  • Pregnant women experiencing anxiety, depression, or stress related to their pregnancy
  • New mothers in the postpartum period (the first year after childbirth) who are feeling overwhelmed, sad, or anxious

  • Mothers who have experienced a perinatal loss and are navigating their grief

How do I know if what I'm feeling is normal or something more serious?

  • While some moodiness and worry are normal, it may be time to seek help if your symptoms are persistent, are getting worse, interfere with your ability to care for yourself or your baby, or make it hard to get through your day. You don’t have to wait for a crisis to get support.
