How PCIT Works

Unlike traditional therapies where you are told what to do in an office and sent home to try it alone, virtual PCIT provides “live coaching” where the behavior actually happens. We have traded the traditional one-way mirror for secure video coaching, allowing us to support you right from your own living room. In PCIT, the most important relationship is between you and your child - and that happens most authentically in your own home.

Your Journey from Assessment to Graduation

PCIT is highly structured, data-driven, and completely transparent. We don’t guess whether the therapy is working — we measure it at every step. Here is exactly how we get started.

Step 1: Initial Intake & Behavioral Assessment

Before coaching begins, we schedule a comprehensive virtual intake session. You will complete standardized clinical questionnaires about your child's behavior. We then conduct a structured, virtual behavioral observation, watching you and your child interact in your natural environment. This baseline data allows us to precisely measure your child's symptoms and customize our upcoming coaching sessions to your family's exact needs.

Step 2: The Teach Sessions

Before practicing with your child, you and your therapist will meet virtually for a Parent-Only session. We will map out the specific psychological concepts behind the upcoming phase (CDI or PDI) so you know exactly what to expect before turning on the camera with your child.

Step 3: Live Coaching Sessions

The core of PCIT. You and your child play in your home while your therapist watches via a secure video platform, providing gentle, immediate feedback directly into your earbud.

Inside a Typical 60-Minute Coaching Session

Because I-PCIT takes place in your home, our sessions are highly focused, efficient, and structured to maximize every minute. Every weekly session follows a predictable, three-stage flow.

Stage 1: Clinical Check-In & Data Review

5–10 Minutes

We begin each session with a parent-only check-in. Your child can play nearby while we review your Special Time homework from the week. We analyze your daily tracking sheets and discuss any specific behavioral challenges or wins that occurred in your household since our last meeting.

Stage 2: Virtual Live Coaching

30–45 Minutes

This is the core of the session. You turn your device’s camera toward the play space and put in your wireless earbud. As you and your child play, your therapist observes the interaction in real time, providing immediate feedback, suggesting specific PRIDE skills to use, or guiding you step-by-step through a discipline sequence.

Stage 3: Collaborative Wrap-Up

5–10 Minutes

Once the play session is complete, we transition back to a parent-focused discussion. We highlight the milestones you hit during the session, graph your skill progression, and collaborate on your customized homework goals for the upcoming week.

The Clinical Benefits of Internet-Delivered PCIT

Many families initially look for an in-person clinic, but clinical research shows that Internet-Delivered PCIT (I-PCIT) is just as effective as in-office care — and frequently yields faster, more permanent results.

No "Clinic Behavior" Illusion

Children frequently act perfectly in a novel, sterile therapist's office, only to resume their meltdowns the moment they return home. Virtual therapy captures your child's authentic, everyday behavior.

Immediate Real-World Practice

Behavior challenges don't happen in a vacuum — they happen at your kitchen table, in the play room, and during bedtime routines. We help you master these tools in the exact spots where the meltdowns usually occur.

Seamless Skill Transfer

Because you practice these techniques in your own environment from day one, you don't have to worry about how to translate clinic skills to home life. The environment never changes, so the progress sticks.

Privacy & Comfort

Your child remains in a familiar, safe environment, which often leads to more natural interactions and faster progress.

No LA Traffic

Save hours of driving and the stress of navigating Los Angeles traffic and parking with a child. Simply log on and start your session.

Simple Technology for Powerful Results

You do not need to be a tech expert to participate in I-PCIT. The requirements are minimal and easily integrate into any household.

A Device

A laptop, tablet, or smartphone positioned so the therapist can clearly see the play space.

A Wireless Earbud

A single Bluetooth earbud (like an AirPod) worn by the parent, allowing you to hear your coach without your child being distracted by our voice.

An Internet Connection

A standard internet connection to log into our secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform.

Common Questions About Virtual Coaching

Most families graduate within 12–20 weeks. Because PCIT is criteria-based rather than time-based, we move entirely at your pace, graduating only when you meet specific skill milestones and your child’s behavior returns to normal limits.

We are entirely transparent! We casually explain to young children that the therapist is the parent’s helper, listening in to help the parent be the absolute best play partner and leader they can be. Kids quickly forget the earbud is even there.

Absolutely. We highly encourage all primary caregivers to log into the sessions. Consistency is the secret to modifying behavior, and we can coach both parents sequentially.

“By bringing expert coaching directly into the moments and spaces where real behavior happens, virtual PCIT helps families build skills that actually stick — right in the home where they’re needed most.”
